7 Steps to a successful cloud technology interview

Interviews can be tricky; you could be technically skilled and have numerous certifications from the most prominent institutions but there are certainly other factors that you need to consider while preparing for the interview in your dream job/company. Here are some ‘must-dos’ that will help you smoothly sail through the cloud technology interviews.

Having a clear understanding of the job role and description

Before applying for any job, one must go thoroughly into the job description and the skills required for the job. This is indeed a time-consuming task but will help you understand whether the job aligns with your skills, expertise, and career aspirations.  Recruiters expect candidates to have a clear picture and understanding of the role and job description. This will send across the message that you have not casually applied to the job; on the other hand, being unaware of the roles and responsibilities can be a huge red flag for tech recruiters. Hence, before going for the interview, have a clear understanding of the job role and skillset required. As someone who is in college or fresh out of college, you might be tempted to apply to as many cloud computing job roles to increase your chances of landing a job.

One must analyse factors such as your skill set, your interests (do you want to get into a technical role or functional role), etc. According to an article by theundercoverrecruiter.com – A technical recruiter would be keen to ask about what you know about the job and would focus on your technical skills. If you are not able to answer their questions, then you might not score the points that would get you to the next interview. Therefore, always do your homework!

Foundational knowledge about cloud computing/cloud terminologies

Of course, having technical knowledge related to your field of expertise in cloud is vital, but not knowing the basics of cloud technology leaves a bad impression on the recruiters. It doesn’t matter whether you are aiming for an Azure Developer, a GCP Associate, or an Oracle HCM consultant, having knowledge of cloud fundamentals, basic cloud concepts and terminologies is paramount for any cloud professional.

Showcase expertise on your selected cloud platform

Your resume, qualifications, past work experience, and certifications reflect your skills and ability to work with the cloud platform. One must also be able to demonstrate the acquired skills and knowledge during the interview. Tell them how you acquired these skills and took responsibility for moving to a certain role and build expertise. What technical skills did you learn from doing a project? How did you overcome obstacles that were bottlenecks in a project? Show them your eagerness and curiosity to learn and grow more in your area of interest. Before your job interview, make sure you are thorough with the cloud concepts and answers to commonly asked interview questions in your selected cloud platform.

Demonstrate your business acumen

Undoubtedly, core cloud skills are an integral part to fulfil your job responsibilities but understanding the requirement of the cloud and its importance to an organisation from a business perspective can help you gain a wider outlook. The ability to demonstrate this knowledge can give you an edge over other applicant. Companies are at different levels of their cloud migration journey, some of them are still unsure on how to reach their goal, you need to be able to understand their big picture and aim to be a problem solver and not a problem pointer.

Keep abreast of the latest trends in cloud technology.

According to an article by dataconomy.com – The cloud computing domain is changing rapidly; staying up to speed on new technologies and how they are used by different businesses is always beneficial. Being aware of the latest news, industry trends and updates in cloud technology shows your level of interest in the field and your seriousness to pursue a career in it. Technology is constantly evolving, something that was in demand till yesterday might become redundant today. Always be prepared with the answer to the question “What is the latest you have heard in your field of expertise/technology?”

Research about the organisation

Before the interview take some time to research about the company, their business goals and vision. This step will help you understand whether this company is right for your career growth, direction and whether your vision aligns with that of the company. During the interview, show your interest in the organisation and ask them questions based on what you have researched, this will impress the interviewers. You can start the research by going through their company website, knowing key players of the organisation, and going through their social media accounts such as LinkedIn.

Soft skills for technology interview

According to a survey conducted by talent-works.com – 64% of tech leaders in the UK and 79% in the US feel candidates who apply to their organisation are missing the necessary soft skills to succeed. Technical skills are undoubtedly essential to succeed in a technology role however, showcasing and practicing soft skills will help you thrive in your role and accelerate your career growth. You must highlight your soft skills in the resume; during the interview you can discuss with the interviewer how you developed these skills or situations and examples where these skills helped you progress, provide solutions, solve conflicts, etc. Some of the most basic soft skills for technology professionals are good communication, teamwork, and time management. There are many essential soft skills one must have that can impress the interviewers.

A lot of us can never feel 100% prepared for interviews. Often the success of an interview depends on factors that are out of our control, the best you can do is to prepare as much as possible, be confident and true to yourself, you got this!
