A brief introduction to the world of Azure – and how you can become an expert in it

We recently had a chance to speak with Amanpreet Bhatia, an Azure developer working with a large UK-based insurer. Here are some insights from our conversation with him, which will help any aspirant embark on a high-growth career path in the world of cloud computing.

Can you tell us a little about how you got here, and how you zeroed in on this career path?

Before joining FPL, I was working as a Business Intelligence Developer for around 3 years. Being in a technical world, I thought of upgrading my skillset to meet the market needs at that time. I came across Apps2Fusion on the Internet and found it relevant to my existing knowledge. As we all know how Cloud computing platforms are being adopted by businesses throughout the world, I decided to kick-off with the Azure Fundamentals training module of A2F.

Lets talk a little about the world of cloud computing, specifically about Azure.

We have spoken with a lot of our students, and freshers/graduates who are seeking a high-growth career path in the tech world, but don’t necessarily know what all is out there. What exactly is Azure, and how does it help organisations?

Microsoft has leveraged its constantly-expanding worldwide network of data centers to create Azure, a Cloud platform for building, deploying, and managing services and applications, anywhere. It’s been said that the on-premise data center has no future. Self-hosted data centers are becoming obsolete, being replaced by increasingly available and affordable cloud solutions. The main reason why companies nowadays are choosing Azure are – Flexibility (on the fly scale-up & scale-down), Cost, Disaster recovery (high-speed and geographically decentralized infrastructure),Logging capabilities (integrated health monitoring and alert capabilities), and what not.

Many people have an idea that these careers are high-growth and high paying. What is it that makes them so?

As more businesses flock to Microsoft Azure, demand for skilled cloud professionals is only going to increase. Right now, there’s nowhere near enough Azure talent around to fill the increasing number of roles in the market, being a relatively new technology. Companies are battling to find the best candidates, driving up wages in the process, and putting those with the skills to do the job in a very comfortable position.

Can you tell us some simple steps an aspirant can take to start on this career path?

To get onboarded into the Cloud world, if it’s a fresher/entry-level candidate, one should try to learn at least one programming language. Getting to know logical programming is a good way to kick start your journey. There are a lot of trainings available on the Internet today, but one should consider something that focuses on multiple areas like logic building, understanding data, security concepts etc, something that follows a holistic approach towards learning.

What are the job titles and roles going forward?

Azure Developer, Architect, Data Engineer, Administrator, Consultant, DevOps Engineer

Who can take this up as a career choice?

Anyone from a fresher/entry-level candidate to an experienced IT professional can pursue a career in Azure.

What are the top 4 skills every aspiring tech graduate needs on his/her resume?

  • Any one programming language; showcase your technical skills
  • Data is everywhere, so knowledge of any database system
  • Theoretical knowledge of Cloud computing concepts
  • And lastly, have big aspirations!
