Q: After installation of WLS and creation of domain, at many points files permissions were changed to 777. What is the recommendation in terms of users, groups, permission level for the installation of WLS?

Yes Umair , you will have to start the WLS installation by oracle user or with the user you have created not with root login .

Thanks

    Hi Umair,

While creating domain , it will ask you to create user, which is the default administrator for WLS . By default the name of the user will be Weblogic . This user will be used to start the development mode servers and also for logging to Weblogic console. There is no extra user permission required for the user or user group .

    Thanks

    My response to the thread:http://apps2fusion.com/discussion-forum/retail-training-forum/wls-installation-pre-requisites-in-terms-of-permission-set

Thank you Kashif for your response. But, my question is regarding file, directory level permissions. After the installation of WLS, Domain Creation, instructor changed the permission of files, directories at various points. Which seems as the installer was not run with the desired level of permissions. Please clear.

    Hi Umair ,

The trainer has given 777 ( all permission ) to the access.log file after installation since the web logic server was not starting . This is the permission you need to give when there WLS is unable to start after installation, usually not required .
It's better practice to perform following steps before starting WLS installation by logging as root user :

1)Create a new group and user.

    groupadd -g 1000 oinstall
    useradd -u 1100 -g oinstall oracle
    passwd oracle

2)Create the directories in which the Oracle software will be installed.

    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/fmw11g
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/config/domains
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/config/applications
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01
    chmod -R 775 /u01/

3)Append the following entries into the "/home/oracle/.bash_profile" file.

    export MW_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/fmw11g
    export WLS_HOME=$MW_HOME/wlserver_10.3
    export WL_HOME=$WLS_HOME
    # Set to the appropriate JAVA_HOME.
    #export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_33
    export JAVA_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/jrockit-jdk1.6.0_45-R28.2.7-4.1.0
    #export JAVA_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/jdk1.7.0_17
    export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

Hope so these resolves your query . Please let me know if more explanation is required . We are happy to help you !!!

    Thank you Kashif.
Last thing I would need to clear is that if we are creating a separate oracle user, then the WLS installation must also go with that user, right?
