Integration Repository [ iRep ] in Release 11i is perhaps meaningless unless your customer has Oracle SOA Suite and of course unless the developer decides to use the Oracle Apps Adapter in their BPEL flow.
To work with integration repository in Release 11i, not only you are enforced to use Oracle's Oracle Apps Adapter, but also there is another major restriction in Integration Repository of Release 11i.
This second limitation exists because the Integration Repository in Release 11i is not extensible. These limitations however are elegantly overcome in Release 12. This article discusses the comparison and R12 SOA features in details.
Coming back to Release 11i limitations for example, what if you want to add a new concurrent program to integration repository, then you simply can not do so. In case of 11i case either your third party or you must have Oracle SOA suite with additional licences to use the oracle apps adapter. Plus you will need to install a SOA server by yourself if you wish to make the iRep contents available as a WSDL to the third party. Basically you will end up creating a wrapper around the iRep API using apps adapter in Oracle SOA Suite.
The wrapper will be the BPEL process that internally uses the Oracle Apps Adapter.
In other words, in Release 11i you need a BPEL/ESB process to merely expose your Integration Repository as a web service to the third party.

Let us assume that you absorb this efforts and create BPEL wrappers to expose Integration Repository contents as a web service.
However you might also need to expose your custom API or custom concurrent programs as web services to the third parties.
Unfortunately in 11i you can not take the Integration Repository route to achieve this in Release 11i because Oracle does not allow customers to add contents into Integration Repository in Release 11i.

A much more elegant way in Release 11i is to expose your components as WebServices is by leveraging the Oracle XML Gateway.
The book written by Vladimir and myself has step by step examples for creating inbound and outbound flows using XML gateway.

Now coming back to the Integration Repositories, the features are great in R12.1 onwards. All the limitations as listed above have been overcome by Oracle in R12.1+ onwards.
This powerpoint explains in details how these limitations are overcome. The details of these R12.1 features are in this PowerPoint attached.

Further to this ppt, you must read the following guides from from Oracle. These are excellent PDF's, some of the best documentation produced by Oracle. The developers guide also explains how you can download the SOA/BPEL composites from Oracle Apps, customize them and then re-upload those to Oracle R12. Even though this is documented, this feature isn't yet enabled in current R12.1 version of Oracle EBusiness Suite. But these guides are a great insight

Hello Anil,
I have been supporting BPEL for 6 months now with zero BPEL back ground (which would explain my struggle). I have few issues I am working now and need help.
I tried to create an account in your blog but have been unsuccessful. Please let me know if I can leverage your expertise.

Cur rent problem is : Many bing_faults are being created with below error. WHat I understand is binding_faults have to be handled just like exceptions and this one is not handled so. Is there a way, I can revert or bypass this error and go forward?

Hi Anil,
Thanks for valuable information. Currently we are planning to expose some of the custom interfaces as webservice in R12.0.6. We donot have any SOA server or DMZ. I beleive Oracle XML gateway is the only option since iRep in R12.0.6 is not very helpful. Please can you help us understand how can we expose Custom interfaces for outside world to be used as webservice.

Ma ny thanks in advance.
